FAQs
Where should I start?
If your child is in year four, start with Trap from The Cadwaladr Chronicles, then continue with Cipher, Siege, and Escape.
After finishing, move on to The Cadwaladr Quests. Avoid second-hand purchases; they may be old, out-of-date editions unsuitable for today’s tests.
For year five, you can start with either Trap or Tangled Time from the Cadwaladr Quests, as the Quests are a standalone trilogy. It depends on how 'quick of a reader' you are.
My child is in year four. Can I start with Tangled Time?
No, it's best to start with Trap, book one of The Chronicles, and work your way through the seven-book series.
Why are the books in second editions?
When CEM stopped paper-based tests, we updated the books for today’s tests. We
removed ‘obscure’ vocabulary and added KNOWLEDGE NUGGETS (SPaG, literary
terms/device explanations, and inferential comprehension questions). Second-hand purchases won’t guarantee up-to-date editions. Escape is in first edition and is up-to-date.
Which are the ‘standalone workbooks’?
The workbooks with a blue or orange triangle in the top-right corner don’t require any Vocabulary Novels.
Which books are for creative writing?
The workbooks with a green triangle in the top-right corner must be used with the corresponding Vocabulary Novel, following the story chapter by chapter.
Do your workbooks have answers?
Yes, they have removable answers. The creative writing workbooks have 'marking checklists', too.
How should we use the Vocabulary Novels?
Treat them like any other book. Don’t stop to learn the bolded words unless you want to. However, we recommend learning the KNOWLEDGE NUGGETS. For more information, refer to the ‘How to’ guide at the front of each Vocabulary Novel.
